The corruption scandal involving Reza Chalid and Pertamina is expected to negatively impact investor confidence in Indonesia's state-owned enterprises and potentially lead to increased scrutiny of the country's oil and gas sector. The estimated $17 billion loss could also strain Indonesia's national budget.
Interpol has issued a red notice for the arrest of Indonesian oil tycoon Reza Chalid, nicknamed the 'gasoline godfather,' over his alleged involvement in a $17 billion corruption scandal at state-owned oil company Pertamina between 2018 and 2023. Chalid, along with his son Muhammad Kerry Adrianto Riza and several high-ranking Pertamina officials, is accused of money laundering and manipulating a lease agreement, specifically by importing crude oil from overseas suppliers at inflated prices instead of sourcing it domestically as mandated by Indonesian law. The Indonesia===Attorney General s Office of Indonesia estimates the corruption cost the state 285 trillion rupiah (around $17 billion) and has named 18 suspects. Chalid's Indonesian passport was revoked in October, and authorities are actively seeking his location.
