Cochin International Airport is set to become the first airport in India to operate hydrogen-powered buses for passenger transport. This initiative, part of the Kerala Hydrogen Valley project under the India's National Green Hydrogen Mission, involves procuring three hydrogen fuel cell electric buses. The Kerala Hydrogen Valley Innovation Cluster Foundation will provide financial support, capped at ₹2.90 crore per bus, for a total project cost of ₹8.7 crore. Cochin International Airport will own and operate the buses, with fuel supplied by a green hydrogen plant jointly developed with Bharat Petroleum. This move aims to significantly reduce emissions and enhance passenger convenience, building on Cochin International Airport's reputation as the world's first fully solar-powered airport. Preliminary trials with a prototype bus developed by EKA Mobility, KPIT Technologies, and Bharat Petroleum have already demonstrated technical viability.
