The Nigeria===National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has launched an alternative development program in Nigeria, the first of its kind in Africa, to combat illicit cannabis cultivation. The pilot scheme, initiated in three communities in Nigeria===Ondo State, aims to replace illegal farming with lawful, sustainable livelihoods. Mohammed Buba Marwa, Chairman/CEO of the NDLEA, emphasized that the program goes beyond crop substitution, focusing on strengthening rural economies, promoting peace, supporting national food production, and improving Nigeria's international standing. The initiative is supported by international partners like the International===United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, Global Partnership on Drug Policies and Development, and Mae Fah Luang Foundation, and aligns with President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda. The NDLEA highlighted the severe impact of cannabis use in Nigeria, with 14.3 million people using psychoactive substances and 10.6 million adults using cannabis annually, and over 75% of seized illicit drugs being cannabis.
