The severe flooding in Morocco, following years of drought, has significantly impacted its agricultural sector, which is a major contributor to the economy. While the immediate impact is negative due to crop destruction and displacement, the International===International Monetary Fund anticipates overall economic growth for Morocco due to the replenished water reserves.
Morocco has been hit by severe flooding after experiencing seven consecutive years of drought. The heavy downpours have submerged over 100,000 hectares of agricultural land, destroying key crops like sugar beet, citrus, and vegetables, and forcing the displacement of over 180,000 people and their livestock. The agricultural sector, which accounts for 12% of Morocco's economy and employs a third of its workforce, is among the most affected. In response, the Moroccan government has announced a $330 million relief plan, with a tenth earmarked for farmers and livestock breeders. Despite the immediate devastation, the International===International Monetary Fund projects nearly five percent economic growth for Morocco, attributing it to the replenished dams, which are now almost 70% full. Neighboring countries like Algeria, Tunisia, Portugal, and Spain have also experienced severe weather.
