The extension of the Generalised Scheme of Preferences Plus status for Pakistan by the European Union is expected to have a positive impact on Pakistan's export-oriented industries, particularly textiles, leather goods, and surgical instruments. This will likely lead to increased foreign exchange earnings for Pakistan and continued competitive access to European Union markets.
Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, chaired a high-level inter-ministerial meeting to review and strengthen Pakistan's economic and trade cooperation with the European Union. The discussions focused on the Generalised Scheme of Preferences Plus framework, under which Pakistan has completed four biennial reviews and reaffirmed its commitment to meeting all obligations. The Generalised Scheme of Preferences Plus status, granted to Pakistan by the European Union in 2014 and extended until 2027, allows for reduced or zero tariffs on exports, significantly benefiting Pakistan's textile, leather goods, and surgical instruments sectors. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also previously met with Raimundas Karoblis, the European Union's Ambassador to Pakistan, to reiterate Pakistan's commitment to enhancing trade ties under this framework.
