India and Canada have agreed to enhance cooperation on national security and law enforcement, including the establishment of security and law-enforcement liaison officers in each other's countries. This decision followed meetings between India's National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Canada's Deputy Clerk and National Security and Intelligence Adviser Nathalie Drouin, as well as Canada's Minister for Public Safety Gary Anandasangaree. The two nations will also formalize cooperation on cybersecurity policy and information-sharing, and continue discussions on fraud and immigration enforcement. This move is seen as an effort to normalize relations between India and Canada, which had been strained following a diplomatic row over the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023. The cooperation aims to facilitate timely information exchange on issues of mutual concern, such as the illegal flow of drugs, particularly Fentanyl precursors, and transnational organized criminal networks.
