The opening of NanoIC signifies a major step for the European semiconductor industry, reducing reliance on US and Asian supply chains. This initiative is expected to boost innovation, attract investment, and enhance Europe's competitiveness in advanced chip manufacturing, positively impacting related technology sectors.
The European Union has officially opened NanoIC, the largest pilot line under the EU Chips Act, located at IMEC (imec) in Leuven, Belgium. This €2.5 billion facility, funded by the European Union, national and regional governments (including Belgium===Flanders), and industry partners like ASML Holding, aims to accelerate the development of next-generation semiconductor technology. NanoIC is the first European facility to deploy advanced Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) lithography, enabling chip design and manufacturing beyond two nanometers. It operates on an open-access model for startups, researchers, and large organizations, fostering innovation in AI, autonomous vehicles, healthcare, and 6G mobile technology. The project involves partners such as Tyndall National Institute, CEA-Leti: Laboratoire d électronique des technologies de l information, Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, and CSSNT, strengthening Europe's position in the global semiconductor market.
