Bangladesh Holds Post-Uprising National Election

Bangladesh is holding a pivotal national election following the 2024 ouster of long-time premier Sheikh Hasina in a Gen Z-driven uprising. The election pits two coalitions led by the Bangladesh===Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Bangladesh===Jamaat-e-Islami, with the BNP currently having an edge in opinion polls. Sheikh Hasina's Bangladesh===Awami League is banned, and she remains in self-imposed exile in India, which has led to deteriorating ties between Bangladesh and India, potentially allowing China to expand its influence. Over 2,000 candidates from at least 50 parties are vying for 300 seats in the Jatiya Sangsad. Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, head of the interim government, emphasized the election's significance as an expression of public awakening. A referendum on constitutional reforms, including establishing a neutral interim government and strengthening judicial independence, will also be held.
