India's Thali Costs Decline in January
Analysis based on 19 articles · First reported Feb 12, 2026 · Last updated Feb 18, 2026
The decline in food costs, particularly for essential items like vegetables and pulses, suggests a potential easing of inflationary pressures in India, which could positively influence consumer spending and economic stability. However, rising tomato and LPG prices indicate some persistent cost challenges.
The cost of preparing home-cooked vegetarian and non-vegetarian thalis in India declined in January compared to the previous year. This reduction was primarily driven by a significant fall in the prices of onions, potatoes, and pulses, attributed to higher stock availability and increased imports of Bengal gram, yellow pea, and black gram. However, a sharp increase in tomato prices and a rise in liquefied petroleum gas cylinder prices partially offset the overall decline. S&P Global===CRISIL Intelligence reported a 1% year-on-year fall in vegetarian thali costs and a 7% drop for non-vegetarian thalis, highlighting the mixed inflationary environment.
