The surge in political violence and intimidation, fueled by new technologies like Artificial intelligence, could lead to narrowing political representation and instability, potentially impacting investor confidence in affected nations like the United States. This trend could also influence policy-making and governance effectiveness.
A survey by the Inter-Parliamentary Union revealed a global surge in violence, threats, and harassment against politicians, particularly online. The survey, conducted mostly in 2025 across over 80 countries, found that 71% of respondents experienced violence, with women disproportionately targeted by sexualized abuse. Martin Chungong, Secretary-General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, warned that this trend, if unchecked, could have severe repercussions for democracy worldwide. The United States was noted as having a 'very acute' situation, with examples including attacks against Josh Shapiro, Nancy Pelosi's husband, Ilhan Omar, and assassination attempts against Donald Trump. The report also highlighted that new technologies, including Artificial intelligence, are fueling these attacks, with much online abuse being anonymous and potentially involving state actors. Lawmakers are reportedly becoming more cautious, which risks narrowing political representation.
