The increased regulatory enforcement by the India===Telecom Regulatory Authority of India against unsolicited commercial communications is expected to improve consumer trust in the telecommunications sector. This will likely lead to a more compliant and transparent market for legitimate telemarketers, while unregistered telemarketers face significant penalties.
The India===Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released its annual update for 2025, detailing a significant increase in enforcement actions against unsolicited commercial communications (UCC) and enhanced consumer engagement through the Do Not Disturb (DND) ecosystem. TRAI issued 731,120 notices to unregistered telemarketers, subjected 473,075 entities to one-month communication restrictions, and imposed six-month caps on 89,936 repeat offenders. Additionally, 184,482 telecom resources were disconnected in 2025, contributing to a cumulative total of over 2.1 million disconnections since August 2024. Consumer complaints reached 3.1 million, with over half submitted via the DND application, which saw an 84.43% increase in installations. TRAI Chairman Anil Kumar Lahoti highlighted the focus on consumer control and the effectiveness of a two-pronged strategy involving legitimate consent-based communications and robust enforcement measures.
