Pakistan Adopts Islamabad AI Declaration

The Government of Pakistan has formally adopted the Islamabad AI Declaration on Sovereign, Responsible, and Capability-Driven Artificial Intelligence following the Indus AI Summit 2026. This declaration defines Pakistan's national position on AI, transitioning from policy articulation to disciplined national execution. Presented by Federal Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja, it affirms a sovereign and inclusive approach to AI, led by the private sector and enabled by government, to advance Digital Society, Digital Economy, and Digital Governance. The Declaration outlines nine foundational principles, including AI as a sovereign choice, human accountability, a pragmatic deployment model, sovereign data stewardship, and investment in national capability. Dr. Sohail Munir, Chairperson of the Pakistan===Pakistan Digital Authority, highlighted its role in establishing AI governance and supervision. The Pakistan===Pakistan Digital Authority has been directed to operationalize and enforce a national AI Supervisory Framework.
