The death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes and subsequent violence negatively impacted Mexican tourism and airline industries, with shares of Volaris, GAP, and ASUR falling. If unrest continues, it could also affect electronics and semiconductor manufacturing in Jalisco state.
Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as 'El Mencho' and leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, was killed in a military operation by Mexican special forces in Jalisco. His capture was aided by information from a confidante of one of his romantic partners. The operation, which involved US intelligence, led to a shootout where Oseguera and two bodyguards were injured and later died. In retaliation, cartel loyalists initiated widespread violence across Mexico, blocking roads and burning cars, resulting in the deaths of 25 National Guard members, 30 cartel members, and one bystander. 'El Tuli', Oseguera's right-hand man, was also killed. The unrest caused flight cancellations and a drop in shares for Mexican airlines and airport operators. Mexican authorities are monitoring for cartel restructuring, while US President Donald Trump urged Mexico to increase anti-cartel efforts.
