Ukraine War: Drones Reshape Battlefield Tactics

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has seen a radical transformation in military tactics, with small, low-cost drones now dominating the battlefield. Ukrainian tank platoon commander Valentyn Bohdanov notes that traditional armored warfare is nearly impossible due to the pervasive threat of First-Person-View (FPV) drones. These drones, costing only hundreds of dollars, have expanded the 'kill zone' along the 1,200-km front, making troop movements, evacuations, and tank assaults increasingly deadly. Drone-inflicted casualties have surged from under 10% in 2022 to up to 80% last year, leading to an 'air battle of mutual denial.' This shift has prompted the emergence of mobile drone-hunting teams and the increased use of unmanned ground vehicles for logistics and medical evacuations. Colonel Viacheslav Kurinnyi, a chief doctor, highlights the severe impact on medical evacuation times, extending them beyond the critical 'golden hour.'
