Union Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has approved the construction of 5,000 houses for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in India===Manipur under the India===Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G). This decision follows a meeting between Shivraj Singh Chouhan and India===Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, accompanied by Deputy Chief Ministers Nemcha Kipgen and Losii Dikho, in New Delhi. The houses are intended for IDPs affected by the ethnic violence between Imphal Valley-based Meiteis and hills-based Kuki-Zo groups, which has resulted in over 260 deaths and thousands displaced since May 2023. The India===Manipur government had submitted a proposal for this special project, and the Union Rural Development Ministry also approved a special window of the Awass+ 2024 household survey to identify eligible beneficiaries. This initiative aims to accelerate the resettlement of displaced families, with the state previously targeting to resettle 10,000 families by March 31.
