The successful testing of WinGD's ammonia-fuelled marine engine, in collaboration with HD Hyundai===HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and Exmar Shipmanagement, is a significant step towards decarbonizing the shipping industry. This development is expected to boost confidence in ammonia as a marine fuel, potentially leading to increased adoption of similar technologies and impacting the maritime value chain positively.

Shipping Marine Engineering Renewable Energy

Swiss marine power company WinGD has achieved a major milestone by completing both Type Approval Testing (TAT) and Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) of its ammonia-fuelled two-stroke marine engine. The testing of the X52DF-A-1.0 engine took place in January 2026 at the HD Hyundai===HD Hyundai Heavy Industries' Engine & Machinery (HHI-EMD) facility in South Korea, witnessed by Lloyd s Register and supervised by Exmar Shipmanagement. This engine is destined for a 46,000m³ LPG/ammonia carrier on order for Exmar Shipmanagement, which will be among the first ammonia-fuelled gas carriers in commercial service. The multi-year development process demonstrated excellent performance, with NOx emissions during ammonia operation well below diesel use and negligible N2O emissions. WinGD has already secured an orderbook of around 30 X-DF-A engines across various vessel segments, reflecting growing confidence in ammonia as a future marine fuel.
