The N98 billion investment in Nigeria's primary healthcare sector is expected to have a positive impact on the nation's human capital and productivity, potentially leading to long-term economic growth. The focus on local pharmaceutical manufacturing through the Presidential Initiative for Unlocking the Health Care Value Chain (PVAC) could also benefit domestic pharmaceutical companies and reduce import dependency.
President Bola Tinubu announced that his administration disbursed over N98 billion last year to strengthen primary healthcare delivery across Nigeria, marking one of the largest single-year investments in grassroots health services. This funding, released through the Nigeria===Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF), supported operational expenses for over 8,300 primary healthcare centers (PHCs) nationwide. The initiative is part of the administration's Renewed Hope Agenda, aiming to reposition the health sector as a cornerstone of national development. The financial injection has led to the upgrade of 2,565 PHCs, with another 1,456 undergoing rehabilitation, and plans to expand to over 13,500 facilities. These upgraded centers now offer 24-hour services, staffed by trained health workers, and equipped with essential medicines, basic medical equipment, and stable power and water supplies. Additionally, over 78,000 frontline health workers have been trained, and health insurance coverage has been expanded to over 10 million vulnerable individuals. The Maternal Mortality Newborn Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMII) is tracking over 100,000 pregnant women, providing free emergency maternal and newborn care. The Presidential Initiative for Unlocking the Health Care Value Chain (PVAC) aims to reduce Nigeria's dependence on imported medicines by incentivizing local pharmaceutical manufacturing. Bola Tinubu urged Nigeria===All Progressives Congress governors and legislators to align with federal reforms, increase health budget allocations, and ensure the functionality of health facilities.
