The inauguration of these inland waterways projects is expected to positively impact logistics, trade, and tourism in India's Northeast region. Reduced logistics costs and enhanced cross-border commerce with Bangladesh and Bhutan are anticipated, reinforcing the Brahmaputra's role as an economic corridor.
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated three major inland waterways infrastructure projects on National Waterway-2 (River Brahmaputra) in Dibrugarh, Assam. The projects include Customs and Immigration Complexes at Bogibeel and Dhubri, and a renovated Heritage Building of the India===Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) at Dibrugarh. These initiatives, guided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Vikas and Virasat' approach, aim to strengthen logistics, enhance passenger movement, and unlock new opportunities for trade and tourism in the Northeast. The complexes will improve operational efficiency along NW-2 and facilitate trade under the Indo-Bangladesh Protocol routes, positioning Dhubri as a strategic gateway for cross-border commerce with Bangladesh and Bhutan. The projects are expected to reduce logistics costs and boost regional economic growth.
