The forecast of above-normal heatwave days in India could negatively impact agricultural output, increase demand for power and water, and strain public health services. The lowest February rainfall since 2001 also raises concerns for water-dependent industries.
The India===India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast predicting above-normal heatwave days across most parts of India between March and May. This includes regions like West Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana, Punjab, and parts of Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. IMD DG Mrutyunjay Mohapatra warned that these conditions pose significant risks to public health, water resources, power demand, and essential services. While March is expected to see normal to below-normal maximum temperatures in many areas, the overall outlook for the season is concerning. Additionally, India experienced its lowest February rainfall since 2001, with no cold waves recorded during the month, and the 10th highest maximum temperature, third highest minimum temperature, and fifth highest mean temperature since 1901.
