Myanmar Junta Grants Mass Prisoner Amnesty
Analysis based on 25 articles · First reported Mar 02, 2026 · Last updated Mar 02, 2026
Myanmar's military government, led by Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing, granted amnesty to over 10,000 prisoners and reduced sentences for others on Peasants' Day. This includes 7,337 individuals convicted under a counterterrorism law, and nearly 12,500 people facing similar charges will have their cases dropped. Ten foreign nationals will also be released and deported. The amnesty comes two weeks before the new parliament is set to convene following recent elections, which critics deemed neither free nor fair. Former leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who was ousted in the 2021 military takeover and is serving a 27-year sentence, was not among those released. The move is seen by analysts as an attempt by the junta to improve its image amidst a transition to a nominally civilian government, despite the continued detention of Aung San Suu Kyi and the dissolution of her party, Myanmar===National League for Democracy.
