India Launches Indigenous 30 kW EV Drive System

The India===Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) launched an indigenously developed 30 kW Wide Band Gap (WBG)-based Integrated Drive System (IDS) for electric vehicles (EVs) in Chennai, India. Developed by the India===Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Thiruvananthapuram, in collaboration with the IIT Madras and Lucas TVS, this technology aims to boost domestic capabilities in advanced power electronics. The system integrates the electric motor and inverter into a single compact unit, offering improved efficiency and power density. This initiative is crucial for India's rapidly expanding electric passenger vehicle segment, including compact cars and fleet mobility platforms, as it seeks to reduce import dependency, lower costs through localisation, and support manufacturing aligned with Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes. S. Krishnan, Secretary of MeitY, highlighted that this development aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Make in India, Make for the World' vision, promoting India's transition from a technology-importing to a technology-developing and exporting nation. The project was executed under the National Mission on Power Electronics Technology (NaMPET) and is expected to create manufacturing opportunities for MSMEs in power electronics, thermal systems, and control hardware.
