The N48 billion funding for engineering and technology upgrades in Nigerian universities is expected to positively impact the education sector and potentially lead to a more skilled workforce, which could benefit various industries in Nigeria. This initiative, alongside the NELFUND student loan disbursements, signals a significant government push to reform and strengthen higher education infrastructure and access to financing.
The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved N48 billion to enhance engineering and technology faculties in 12 selected universities across the country. Each beneficiary institution will receive N4 billion to rehabilitate existing workshops, construct new facilities, and procure modern equipment. This initiative, implemented through the Nigeria===Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and announced by Minister of Education Olatunji Alausa, aims to strengthen practical training, boost graduate skills, and align tertiary education with national development needs, in line with President Bola Tinubu's 'Renewed Hope Agenda'. An additional N20 billion has been earmarked in TETFund's 2026 guidelines for similar upgrades. A Ministerial Monitoring, Evaluation and Implementation Committee, chaired by Ali Rabiu of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, has been inaugurated to ensure transparency and accountability. Separately, the Nigeria===Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) extended its student loan application deadline after disbursing N183 billion to nearly one million students, highlighting broader government efforts in education financing.
