The expansion of Canada===Ontario's online gambling market has led to a significant increase in gambling addiction, particularly among young men, as evidenced by the surge in calls to ConnexOntario. This trend, coupled with record gambling revenues reported by Canada===iGaming Ontario, highlights a growing public health concern that could lead to increased regulatory scrutiny and potential social costs.
A new study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal reveals a more than 300% increase in young men contacting ConnexOntario, Canada===Ontario's mental health helpline, for gambling-related issues since the province expanded its online gambling market. The study analyzed data from January 2012 to September 2025, showing a 317% rise in gambling-related contacts among men aged 15 to 24 after the market opened to private online operators in April 2022, following the launch of PlayOLG in 2015. Daniel Myran, a co-author from North York General Hospital, suggests this reflects a broader increase in harmful gambling behavior. The surge coincides with record gambling activity, with Canada===iGaming Ontario reporting CA$9.5 billion in wagers in January and nearly CAD 100 billion in wagers for 2025.
