Nigeria, in collaboration with key government agencies and international partners, has initiated efforts to establish a national early warning system for health. This system aims to protect Nigerians from growing health risks linked to climate change, pollution, and ecosystem degradation, such as respiratory illnesses, water-borne diseases, and food insecurity. The initiative was highlighted at the National Early Warning Services for Health (WISER) workshop in Lagos, hosted by the Nigeria===Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) in partnership with the Nigeria===Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the Nigeria===National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Nigeria===National Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), and the Nigeria===National Orientation Agency (NOA). The effort aligns with Nigeria's third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0), which commits the country to implementing an integrated climate change, health, and environmental early warning system in at least 18 states by 2030. International support comes from entities like the United Kingdom government, the UK United Kingdom===Met Office, the Rockefeller Foundation, the World Bank Group, the World Meteorological Organization, the World Health Organization, and the United Kingdom===UK Health Security Agency. The workshop emphasizes cross-sector collaboration and aims to design a people-led, tailored early warning system for vulnerable populations.
