Nigeria Implements NERD Policy to Combat Academic Fraud

Nigeria has fully implemented the Nigeria===Nigeria Education Repository and Databank (NERD) policy, a national digital initiative established in 2023 to manage, preserve, and verify education data and records. The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, announced that compliance with NERD is now mandatory for participation in the Nigeria===National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and for accessing services from agencies like TETFund, NUC, NBTE, NCCE, and ITF. The platform aims to strengthen institutional compliance, curb academic fraud, and eliminate disputes over academic records. Within four months, NERD has curated nearly 100,000 digital student submissions and onboarded over 350 tertiary institutions. The initiative also includes the establishment of the NERD Annual National Laureate Prize and Awards Programme to promote academic excellence, with prizes ranging from N5 million to N20 million. Furthermore, the government has taken decisive action against fake academic certificates, removing individuals with fraudulent degrees from public service. The NERD platform is also fostering job creation through collaborations with Nigerian digital entrepreneurs, establishing over 1,000 digital service centers and creating more than 3,000 direct jobs.
