Analysis based on 9 articles · First reported Mar 09, 2026 · Last updated Mar 09, 2026
The Mpox outbreak in Ghana, while concerning, has seen a significant decline in new infections due to government interventions and vaccination campaigns. This positive trend could alleviate potential negative impacts on Ghana's economy and public health sector, which might otherwise face strain from prolonged disease spread.
Ghana has reported 1,038 confirmed cases of Mpox and 8 deaths as of March 3, 2026, since the outbreak began in May 2025. The outbreak has affected 124 districts, with Greater Accra Region and Western Region being the most impacted. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Minister for Health, informed the Ghana===Parliament of Ghana about the government's multi-sectoral response, which includes intensified surveillance, contact tracing, and sustained laboratory testing. Ghana received 33,600 Mpox vaccine doses from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization, with 31,231 individuals vaccinated in hotspot areas. The government is also covering the medical expenses of affected patients. These interventions have led to a significant decline in new infections, with only one patient currently admitted and no critical cases.
