The acquisition of GridGain Systems by MariaDB is expected to intensify competition in the database and AI infrastructure markets, particularly against Oracle Corporation and hyperscalers. This move could lead to increased innovation in high-performance data processing for AI applications, potentially benefiting enterprises seeking sub-millisecond latency.
MariaDB plc has announced a definitive agreement to acquire GridGain Systems, Inc., a pioneer in in-memory computing and the creator of open-source Apache Ignite. This acquisition aims to merge MariaDB's AI-ready relational database with GridGain's scalable, in-memory power to create a new industry standard for sub-millisecond data infrastructure, particularly for agentic AI workloads. The combined platform will offer a unified, hybrid-cloud solution capable of handling transactional, analytical, and AI use cases in a single, high-velocity system. MariaDB CEO Rohit de Souza stated that this union will provide a high-performance, scalable, open alternative to the rigid lock-in of Oracle Corporation and the fragmented complexity of hyperscalers. GridGain CTO Lalit Ahuja emphasized that the combined technology stack will unlock high-performance and reliable data processing for next-generation AI applications. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, and the transaction is subject to customary closing conditions. This acquisition follows MariaDB's recent re-acquisition of MariaDB===MariaDB and its own acquisition by K1 Investment Management in 2024, signaling a period of strategic growth.
