Analysis based on 8 articles · First reported Mar 09, 2026 · Last updated Mar 10, 2026
India's electricity consumption reached a record 133 billion units in February, a 2% increase year-on-year, marking the highest level for the month since at least 2010. This surge is primarily attributed to above-normal temperatures across various regions, leading to higher cooling demand, and continued expansion in manufacturing activity, as highlighted by a S&P Global===CRISIL Intelligence report. Peak power demand also hit 244 GW, slightly surpassing last summer's peak. Power generation rose by 2.4% to 145 BUs, with renewable energy, hydro, and nuclear power showing significant growth, while coal remains the dominant fuel source. S&P Global===CRISIL Intelligence forecasts a 1-1.5% increase in power demand for fiscal 2026, reaching 1,705-1,715 BUs.
