This agreement signifies a growing trend in the shipping industry towards decarbonization, boosting the market for low-carbon marine fuels and potentially increasing demand for companies like Equinor that supply them. It also enhances the market position of Wallenius Wilhelmsen as a provider of sustainable logistics solutions.
Equinor has signed a two-year agreement to supply bio-methanol to Wallenius Wilhelmsen, a major global player in shipping and vehicle logistics. The bio-methanol will be used as bunker fuel for Wallenius Wilhelmsen's upcoming dual-fuel methanol vessels, with deliveries commencing in late 2026 at the Ports of Zeebrugge and Antwerp. This partnership supports the decarbonization of ocean operations and strengthens Wallenius Wilhelmsen's ability to offer lower-emission logistics. Equinor's bio-methanol is produced at its Tjeldbergodden facility in Norway, combined with biogas certificates from captured biogas from manure and other biomass, in line with the EU Renewable Energy Directive. This mass-balance approach allows for production using existing infrastructure and helps capture methane emissions. The deal highlights increasing interest in bio-methanol as a scalable solution for shipping decarbonization, following similar agreements Equinor has with Maersk and Norwegian Cruise Line, and aligns with the International Maritime Organization's goal for net-zero emissions around 2050.
