Portugal Warns of Global Cyber Campaign

The Portugal===Serviço de Informações de Segurança (SIS) of Portugal issued a rare public warning about a global cyber campaign by foreign state-backed hackers. These hackers are targeting the Meta Platforms===WhatsApp and Signal accounts of government officials, diplomats, and military personnel from Portugal and allied countries. The objective is to trick users into sharing sensitive data like passwords to gain access to individual and group chats and shared files. The SIS clarified that the attacks exploit potential careless use by individuals rather than compromising the end-to-end encryption of Meta Platforms===WhatsApp or Signal. This warning follows similar reports from intelligence agencies in the Netherlands regarding Russian-backed hackers launching comparable cyber campaigns.
