The resumption of passenger train services between China and North Korea is expected to positively impact the transportation and tourism industries in both nations, facilitating economic and cultural exchanges. While the direct financial market impact is limited, it signals a strengthening of bilateral ties between China and North Korea.
China has resumed its passenger train service with North Korea, ending a six-year suspension that began with the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The first train, K27, departed Beijing on Thursday, March 12, and is scheduled to arrive in Pyongyang on Friday, March 13. This move is part of China's efforts to shore up cross-border infrastructure and rebuild ties with North Korea. The service will operate four days a week between Beijing and Pyongyang, and daily between Dandong and Pyongyang. Tickets are restricted to business visa holders. China's foreign ministry spokesperson emphasized that the service facilitates people-to-people exchanges between the two 'friendly neighbors'. North Korea's state carrier, Air Koryo, had already resumed flights to China in 2023.
