An assassination attempt was made on Farooq Abdullah, the president of the India===Jammu & Kashmir National Conference and former Chief Minister, on March 11 in Jammu. The assailant, identified as Kamal Singh Jamwal, attempted to open fire on Farooq Abdullah while he was leaving a marriage function. The attempt was foiled by the swift action of Farooq Abdullah's security personnel, who overpowered and arrested Kamal Singh Jamwal on the spot. A revolver used in the crime was recovered. The India===Jammu and Kashmir Police, under the orders of IGP Bhim Sen Tuti, constituted a seven-member Special Investigation Team (SIT), supervised by DIG Shivkumar Sharma, to thoroughly probe the incident. Kamal Singh Jamwal is currently on police remand, facing charges under Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 3/25 of the Arms Act. The SIT has been directed to complete the investigation promptly.
