Lagos Police Withdraw Taskforce from Traffic

The Nigeria===Lagos State Police Command, under the directive of Commissioner Fatai Tijani, has ordered the immediate withdrawal of the Nigeria===Lagos State Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences Unit (Taskforce) from all traffic control and enforcement duties across Nigeria===Lagos State. This decision, announced by Police Public Relations Officer Abimbola Adebisi, is part of an effort to streamline traffic management operations, enhance professionalism, and ensure accountability. The move comes amid persistent public complaints and a viral video posted by ObjectvMedia, which accused Taskforce operatives of unlawful arrest and extortion of motorists. While the unit's traffic-related responsibilities are ceased, its other operational mandates remain in force. Civil society organizations like the Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre, led by Okechukwu Nwanguma, have also raised concerns about the Taskforce's methods, including allegations of entrapment and cash payments for vehicle release. The command has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property and ensuring operations align with the law.
