Nigeria to Establish Cybersecurity Coordination Council

The Federal Government of Nigeria plans to establish a Cybersecurity Coordination Council to strengthen the nation's cyber resilience and enhance coordinated responses to evolving cyber threats. This initiative, spearheaded by the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, follows recent cybersecurity incidents that have disrupted operations across major private institutions, public systems, and Nigeria's services industry. The proposed council will be a non-statutory, multi-stakeholder platform designed to convene key actors from both public and private sectors, including Chief Information Security Officers, cybersecurity professional associations like the Nigerian Computer Society, international technology providers, law enforcement, and relevant government agencies. Its objectives include improving information sharing, developing sector-wide cyber defense protocols, building cybersecurity workforce capacity, and supporting incident response and recovery. The Nigeria===National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Nigeria===Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Galaxy Backbone Limited, and Nigeria===Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) are directed to establish a technical coordination secretariat within NITDA. A national cybersecurity industry roundtable is scheduled for April 2026 to formally commence stakeholder consultations.
