The new visa-free policy by Ghana is expected to positively impact the tourism and trade sectors across Africa by increasing mobility and fostering regional integration. This move could lead to increased business and leisure travel, benefiting economies within the African Continental Free Trade Area.
Ghana is set to implement a visa-free policy for all African passport holders, effective May 25, 2026, coinciding with Africa Day celebrations. This makes Ghana the fifth African nation to adopt such a policy, joining Benin, The Gambia, Rwanda, and Seychelles. The reform eliminates the need for pre-arrival visas and will be launched alongside a new e-visa system to streamline entry procedures while maintaining border security. The announcement was made during Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa's state visit and builds on an earlier initiative by former President Nana Akufo-Addo. Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa highlighted that the policy reinforces Ghana's role in Pan-Africanism and aims to boost tourism and intra-African trade, aligning with efforts under the African Continental Free Trade Area.
