The government of Pakistan launched the Surplus Power Package in December 2025, a special initiative by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, to provide relief and support to the country's industry and agriculture sectors. This package introduced a low tariff rate of Rs. 22.98 per unit on incremental electricity usage. Within the first three months (December 2025 to February 2026), the industrial and agricultural sectors consumed an additional 2,164 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity, accounting for 23% of all units sold to these sectors. This led to cumulative financial savings of over Rs. 20.83 billion, with industries saving Rs. 19.6 billion and agricultural consumers saving Rs. 1.14 billion. The initiative has successfully triggered strong growth in energy demand, encouraging industries to rely more on cost-effective grid power, and is seen as a positive indicator for Pakistan's economic recovery and energy sector stability.
