Farmers and traders in India===Purba Medinipur district, India===West Bengal, are demanding a dedicated research institute for betel leaf cultivation, making it a key issue in the upcoming Assembly Elections. The Betel Leaf Traders Association, led by Mahadev Das, has formally requested the government to establish such an institute to address challenges in processing, medicinal properties, and cultivation. Farmers like Lav Kumar and Gautam Kumar stress the importance of scientific support to ensure high-quality yields and stable market conditions, as approximately 200,000 people depend on this farming. Logistical hurdles in transporting betel leaves to northeastern states like India===Manipur and India===Nagaland, along with volatile market rates and water scarcity, are also pressing concerns. The association had urged India===All India Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee to raise these issues in Parliament, but expressed disappointment over his lack of mention of 'Paan'. Stakeholders believe these demands will influence voting preferences.
