This initiative by the India===Ministry of Defence (India) is expected to positively impact India's defense industry by fostering indigenous design and manufacturing, reducing reliance on foreign original equipment manufacturers. It will create opportunities for Indian private industry and potentially lead to increased domestic investment in the defense sector.
The India===Ministry of Defence (India) has launched a project for the indigenous design and development of a 1000-kg aerial bomb, similar to the Mark 84 bomb, for the India===Indian Air Force. This two-phase project aims to boost India's 'Aatmanirbharta' (self-reliance) in the defense sector, reducing dependence on foreign suppliers. The first phase involves designing and developing six prototypes, while the second phase focuses on procurement, with a target of 600 bombs. The new munition will be compatible with both Russian and Western-origin aircraft operated by the India===Indian Air Force. The project, executed under the 'Make-II' and 'Buy (Indian-IDDM)' categories, requires a minimum of 50% indigenous content and has an estimated timeline of 2.5 years from Expression of Interest issuance to contract signing. Participation is open to eligible Indian entities, including private industry, with provisions for foreign collaboration under specific conditions.
