The successful construction and naming of ammonia-powered vessels by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, with orders from Exmar and Trafigura, signals a significant shift towards eco-friendly shipping. This development is expected to boost the marine fuel and shipbuilding industries, with Ammonia projected to become a major marine fuel by 2050.
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has built the world's first ammonia-powered vessels and held a naming ceremony on March 9 for two of these 46,000-cubic-meter mid-sized gas carriers at its Ulsan shipyard. The vessels, named 'Antwerpen' and 'Arlon' after Belgian cities, are the first two of four ordered by Exmar===Exmar LPG France, a subsidiary of Exmar. These ships are equipped with dual-fuel engines, proprietary cargo tank technology for safe transport of Ammonia and LPG, a shaft generator, and an SCR system to reduce emissions. Ammonia is highlighted as a carbon-free fuel with high storage density, projected by the International Energy Agency to account for 46% of marine fuel demand by 2050. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has secured orders for a total of eight ammonia-powered vessels and continues to lead in next-generation eco-friendly fuel ships.
