The successful methanol bunkering trial at India===Deendayal Port Authority is a positive development for the maritime and energy sectors, signaling India's commitment to green shipping. This initiative is expected to attract investments, foster technology collaboration, and create job opportunities, enhancing India's position in global trade corridors.
India===Deendayal Port Authority (Kandla Port) has successfully advanced its methanol bunkering capabilities, conducting a trial shore-to-ship methanol bunkering operation on April 2, 2026. This move aligns with India's goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and positions the port as a key player in global green shipping corridors. The port, located on India's western coast, already possesses infrastructure for handling grey methanol and is now developing dedicated bunkering capabilities for low-carbon alternative fuels like e-methanol and e-ammonia. DNV Maritime Advisory Services evaluated the port's readiness, rating it at Level 6 on the IAPH Port Readiness Level scale. The trial, conducted in collaboration with partners including Stolt Tankers, J.M. Baxi, Aegis Vopak, and Indian Oil Corporation Ltd., validated key elements such as bunker transfer processes and safety systems. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal emphasized India's resolve to lead the transition towards green shipping, highlighting the initiative's role in strengthening India's position in global trade and supporting long-term economic growth. The port plans to ensure the availability of 500 KTPA of RFNBO-compliant e-methanol by 2028-29 and will undertake ship-to-ship methanol bunkering in the next phase.
