Gas-fired plants account for approximately 80% of Nigeria's electricity, but face disruptions due to pipeline vandalism, mounting debts to gas producers, and weak sector coordination. The committee, formed after the first-quarter 2026 Ministerial Power Sector Working Group meeting, will monitor and resolve critical issues such as pipeline repairs, debt settlements, and commercial barriers. Members include representatives from the Nigeria===Ministry of Power (Nigeria), Nigeria===Nigerian Independent System Operator, Nigeria===Transmission Company of Nigeria, Association of Generation Companies, Niger Delta Power Holding Company, Nigerian Gas Association, and consumer advocacy groups. The committee is tasked with providing proactive recommendations to guarantee payment for gas supplies and ensure sector sustainability. Separately, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume inaugurated a technical committee to scrutinize a proposed $200 billion integrated gas, power, and high-speed rail project by De-Sadel (Nigeria) Limited and China Liancai Petroleum Investment Holdings Limited.
