India, as the BRICS Chair for 2026, hosted the First Health Working Group Meeting in New Delhi. The meeting brought together senior health officials and delegates from BRICS member countries, including Brazil, Russia, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, the United Arab Emirates, and Indonesia, to discuss priority areas in public health. Union Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava emphasized India's theme of 'Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability' and proposed two new priority areas: the BRICS Mission for Healthy Lifestyles and the Promotion of Mental Health and Wellness. The meeting also deliberated on nine existing priority areas, such as the BRICS TB Research Network, collaboration among medical product regulatory authorities, and a BRICS Integrated Early Warning System for infectious diseases. Member countries expressed strong support for India's leadership and the proposed initiatives, aiming to strengthen cooperation in research, innovation, digital health, and equitable healthcare delivery.
