The takeover of schools linked to Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) and Falah-e-Aam Trust (FAT) by the India===Jammu and Kashmir government signifies increased government control over education in the region. This action, based on national security concerns, could lead to further regulatory scrutiny on other private educational institutions.
The India===Jammu and Kashmir government has ordered the takeover of management committees for 58 schools directly or indirectly affiliated with the banned Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) and its Falah-e-Aam Trust (FAT). This action follows adverse intelligence reports and the expiry of the schools' management tenure, building on a previous takeover of 215 schools in August 2025. The India===Interior ministry (MHA) declared JeI an unlawful association under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 (UAPA) in 2019, with the ban extended in 2024. Deputy Commissioners are directed to assume control, propose fresh, verified committees, and ensure academic continuity and quality education in line with National Policy on Education (NEP) norms. The move aims to sever alleged institutional links with banned organizations and maintain stability in education.
