ASEAN Summit Addresses Middle East Crisis

Leaders of the ASEAN convened in Cebu, Philippines, for a summit primarily dominated by the economic fallout from the Middle East crisis. The conflict has caused significant disruptions to energy flows, trade routes, and food supply chains, posing serious challenges for the region's fuel import-dependent economies. The ASEAN leaders are developing a contingency plan to ensure stable fuel and food supplies, including coordinated emergency fuel sharing, diversifying oil sources, and promoting new energy technologies. They also plan to issue a declaration upholding international law, sovereignty, and freedom of navigation, which could be seen as a veiled rebuke to United States, Israel, and Iran. The summit also addresses the safety of over a million ASEAN citizens working in the Middle East. Other regional issues, such as Myanmar's civil war, the South China Sea territorial disputes with China, and the border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia, are also on the agenda, though significant breakthroughs are not expected. Maria Theresa Lazaro, Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary, emphasized the need for ASEAN to strengthen crisis coordination.
