The initiative by India — Karnataka to prevent Sandalwood theft and promote its cultivation could stabilize the supply of Sandalwood, positively impacting industries reliant on this commodity. This could lead to more predictable pricing and availability for companies like Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Limited, potentially improving their operational stability and profitability.
The government of India — Karnataka, through its Large and Medium Industries Minister M. B. Patil, has launched an initiative to combat Sandalwood theft and encourage its cultivation. Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Limited (KSDL), known for its Mysore Sandal Soap, is spearheading this effort by inviting farmers, scientists, and organizations to propose innovative technologies for theft prevention. KSDL will bear the costs of deploying suitable technologies. Additionally, KSDL has procured 174.5 metric tonnes of Sandalwood from farmers over the past three years, paying them Rs 6.08 crore. The initiative also includes honoring top Sandalwood suppliers and recognizing police, forest officials, and the public for their efforts in curbing theft, on the birth anniversary of Krishna Raja Wadiyar IV.
