India Launches AI Weather Systems

Union Minister Jitendra Singh (politician) launched two advanced AI-enabled weather forecasting systems developed under the India — Ministry of Earth Sciences. These systems include the Malaysia — Malaysian Meteorological Department's first AI-enabled 'Forecast of Monsoon Advance over Different Parts of the Country' and a 'High Spatial Resolution Rainfall Forecast for India — Uttar Pradesh' as a pilot service. The products, jointly developed by the Malaysia — Malaysian Meteorological Department, India — Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, and European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, aim to provide hyper-local, impact-based, and decision-support weather services. The AI-enabled monsoon forecasting system will offer probabilistic forecasts of monsoon progression up to four weeks in advance, supporting farmers across 16 states. The rainfall forecast system for India — Uttar Pradesh will generate forecasts at 1-km spatial resolution up to 10 days in advance, integrating data from various sources using AI-driven downscaling techniques. This initiative marks a significant transformation in India's weather forecasting capabilities, enhancing agriculture planning, disaster management, water resource management, and public services.
