World Bank $65M Funding for Nigeria SPESSE

The World Bank Group has approved an additional $65 million in financing for Nigeria's Sustainable Procurement, Environmental and Social Standards Enhancement (SPESSE) project, bringing the total funding to $145 million since its inception in 2021. This new phase, coordinated by the Nigeria — National Universities Commission, aims to train an additional 24,000 Nigerians, building on the 40,000 already trained. The project focuses on strengthening capacity in procurement, environmental management, and social standards across Nigeria's public and private sectors. Six centers of excellence have been established in universities like the University of Lagos, Lagos State University, and Ahmadu Bello University to offer specialized academic programs, including PhDs, and facilitate international collaborations. The initiative also supports the rollout of Nigeria's electronic procurement system, leveraging technologies like machine learning and artificial intelligence to improve efficiency. Key figures like Abdullahi Ribadu of the Nigeria — National Universities Commission, Adebowale Adedokun of the Nigeria — Bureau of Public Procurement, and Ishtiak Siddique of the World Bank Group highlighted the project's achievements and future goals, emphasizing its importance for sustainable development and good governance in Nigeria.
