Assam's First Legal Agarwood Export

India — Assam has achieved a significant milestone by making its first legally approved export of agarwood chips to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. This initial consignment, valued at Rs 2.35 crore, was dispatched from Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport after securing all necessary clearances, including a CITES permit and a restricted export license from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade. Dr. Jehirul Islam, Founder Chairman of MJI Group and Chairman of the All India — Assam Agarwood Planters & Traders Association, flagged off the shipment, highlighting it as a historic breakthrough. The export is a direct result of the India — Assam Agarwood Promotion Policy, 2020, supported by India — Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, which aims to legalize and regulate the cultivation, processing, and export of agarwood. This initiative is expected to curb illegal trade, provide fair returns to local growers, and potentially generate up to Rs 50,000 crore in annual revenue for India — Assam, transforming its rural economy and establishing it as a global hub for agarwood and fragrance products. MJI Group and MJI Aromatics Private Limited plan further expansion of plantations and processing facilities.
