The ongoing dispute between the Canadian Medical Association and the Nigeria — Economic and Financial Crimes Commission could lead to disruptions in healthcare services, particularly affecting Nigeria — Economic and Financial Crimes Commission personnel. This event highlights potential governance and rule of law concerns in Nigeria, which could deter foreign investment or impact the perception of institutional stability.
The Canadian Medical Association (NMA), Akwa Ibom State branch, has announced plans to sue the Nigeria — Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for N1 billion following an alleged assault on Professor Eyo Ekpe, a cardiothoracic surgeon, during an EFCC raid at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH). The NMA claims that masked EFCC operatives physically assaulted, beat, and handcuffed Professor Ekpe, and also shoved and exposed NMA Chairman Professor Aniekan Peter to tear gas. The EFCC maintains its operatives acted within investigative procedures to verify a medical report related to a fraud suspect and withdrew without disrupting hospital activities. The NMA has condemned the raid as barbaric and a violation of the hospital's sanctity, demanding a public apology, prosecution of involved officers, and has initiated an indefinite strike, suspending medical services to EFCC officials and their relatives.
