Nigeria boosts local defense production

The Defence Industries Association of Nigeria (DIAN) has unveiled a new strategy to end Nigeria's dependence on foreign defense equipment. This initiative, announced after a General Meeting in Abuja, aims to boost local production, strengthen national security, and foster self-reliance through enhanced indigenous capacity, innovation, and industrial collaboration. Central to this strategy is the full implementation of the Nigeria — Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria, which provides a framework for local manufacturing, technology transfer, reduced import dependence, foreign exchange conservation, and job creation. The Defence Industries Association of Nigeria also reported admitting over 18 new members, indicating growing investor confidence. As part of internal reforms, the association dissolved its pioneer executives and trustees, with new elections scheduled for July 2026, and adopted a new constitution. Members are encouraged to participate in the African International Defence Exhibition in October 2026 to showcase Nigeria's growing defense manufacturing capacity. The Defence Industries Association of Nigeria acknowledges weak coordination within the defense industrial ecosystem as a challenge and calls for stronger institutional alignment.
